The Maclaren Stroller

The Maclaren stroller must be one of the most instantly recognisable baby strollers
ranges on the market. At the very forefront of the huge changes we have seen in pushchair design over the last
several decades it is a brand everyone seems to be familiar with.
The Maclaren Umbrella Stroller
Maclaren is very much a family business. The first stroller prototype was designed by
family member Owen Maclaren and was launched back in 1965. Owen was a former test pilot and aeronautical
designer and his new product drastically changed stroller design with its lightweight frame and innovative folding
mechanism. The Maclaren umbrella stroller effectively changed the face of pushchair design.
Owen Maclaren's original designs are still a very important part of the Maclaren Company's
designs today. Their baby strollers are built to be durable, lightweight and, above all, safe.
The use of materials such as tubular aluminium allows the strollers to be suitable
for heavier toddlers as well as younger babies whilst at the same time being very lightweight and easy to
carry.
Weighing in at just 3Kg (around 6lbs), and with a unique folding mechanism, the Maclaren
stroller was very different from the traditional large prams and pushchairs which most parents were using at that
time. Parents could now easily carry their baby strollers, transport it in the car or on public transport and
store it easily where space was limited. This was something unimaginable at the time. All of a sudden it was
possible to take your baby stroller on a plane!
Over the forty or so years since Owen Maclaren's prototype revolutionized stroller
design Maclaren have continued to develop and improve their range. Continuous research, gathering feedback form
parents and so on is an integral part of the Maclaren Stroller. Top of the list of priorities is, as it has
always been, safety. Maclaren pushchairs always meet, and frequently exceed, industry standards and Government
requirements.
Frames And Braking Systems
The stroller frames and the braking system are the most basic components and also the most
important ones in terms of safety and durability.Testing of both frames and braking mechanisms is rigorous and
is carried out using loads which are well in excess of a normal use being used.
The brakes are designed in such a way that they can be applied very quickly when
necessary. This is achieved through having linked brakes being operated by a single motion.Testing is done on
severe inclines to ensure that the braking systems are effective.
The Five Point Safety Harness
Keeping your baby or toddler secure within the stroller is another vital part of ensuring that they are
transported safely. A five point harness is standard in all Maclaren strollers. The buckles are
designed so that although they are easy for an adult to operate it is very difficult for a child to unfasten
themselves. Again the testing regime for these components is rigorous and goes well beyond what would be
expected in normal use.
Lifetime Warranty
Maclaren offer the unusual option of a lifetime warranty upgrade on their baby strollers and
pushchairs.
